2020 is the ninth year for the Byron Coast Charity Walk.

The walk will start from Dening Park, Byron Bay and walkers can choose from three distances:

  • Broken Head Reserve (12km)
  • Lennox Head SLSC (24km)
  • Ballina SLSC (36km)

Participants can enter individually or in teams of 2-20 people.

Minimum age is 12 years old (accompanied by a paying adult).

Start Times

There is no need to choose your time while registering this year.

Participants can walk or run at any pace however all of our Coastal Charity Walks are non-competitive social events.

Timing services are provided for your information and safety.

Dening Park, Byron Bay to:

  • Broken Head Reserve (12km) - $60
  • Lennox Head SLSC (24km) - $70
  • Ballina SLSC (36km) - $80

Standard participant’s costs will be from 5.01pm 31 December 2019 to 5pm Sunday 1 November 2020 (unless the event is sold out earlier)

Keep our aeromedical service available to our community 24 hours a day 7 days a week and free for all patients.

Every dollar raised contributes to the 3.5m annual to keep our service flying.

For as little as $80 fundraisers can “give a helping hand” to the Rescue Helicopter Service.

Notes on Teams:
* All team members must walk the same distance
* Team captain can invite team members via email or share their team password
* Team members can pay for their own registration. 
* All teams must be paid and completed no later than 10 days prior to the event. Unpaid and incomplete registrations will be cancelled after this date. We will send a reminder up to one month prior.

Walk Requirements
 
* All correspondence will be via the email address supplied
* The waiver must be agreed to by either the team captain or individual to participate
* Minimum age for participants is 12 years & must be accompanied by a paying adult 
* All participants must follow the prescribed route and follow all directions given by identified event staff 
* Each team or individual participant must carry a mobile phone
* Each participant must carry their own water vessel (full at the start)
* If for any reason a participant needs to pull out between checkpoints during the event, they must notify event staff. Participants should call the 'emergency' contact number provided on their Walk bib to advise.

Children & Pets
* Exposure to the elements for babes in arms or toddlers is a high risk at this event, and the terrain is not suitable for strollers. Get your kids to cheer you over the finish line instead.
* As we are going through National Parks & on beaches which have restricted areas for animals – this includes dogs, horses, cats and goats. Please leave all your furry friends at home or with a loved one for the day.

CANCELLATIONS & CHANGES:  Participants may cancel up to one month prior to the event date. The Registration Fee will be refunded to the credit card of which the payment was taken LESS $25, which will be retained by Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter. Participants can transfer their registration to another person at no charge up to 2 weeks prior to the event.

2020 Route

The 2020 Byron Coast Charity Walk will start at the far end of Dening Park (off Middleton Street), Byron Bay.

Participants will exit to Main Beach and walk towards the Cape Byron Lighthouse along Clarkes Beach to the Pass. Exiting at the stairs (not the boat ramp) walkers will follow the Cape Byron Walking Track to the most easterly point in Australia.

After reaching the Cape Byron Lighthouse walkers will walk the path to Tallow Ridge Track and then to the “back track” to Tallow Beach Road.

At Tallow Beach access area walkers will walk back on to the beach at Cozy Corner and head south along Tallows Beach and Suffolk Park Beach to Broken Head. Broken Head will be the 12km finish point.

Walkers will continue on to 7 Mile Beach Road, following the shady shared road to 7 Mile Beach – traffic control will be in place. 

Still heading south walkers will continue on 7 Mile Beach to Lennox Head. Lennox Head SLSC will be the 24km finish point – all walkers must exit through this checkpoint and arrive before 2pm.

After the 24km finish ongoing walkers will continue along the 7 Mile Beach exiting at the end of the beach or at Rayner Lane (from 11.30am) – traffic control will be in place.

Participants will walk along the boardwalk to Pat Morton Lookout and then follow the bush track to Boulders Beach to Sharpes Beach.

Walkers can take the boardwalk or beach past Flat Rock and exiting of the south end of Angels Beach. The last leg of the walk will be along the footpath to the Ballina Surf Life Saving Club – finishing the 36km Byron Coast Charity Walk.

PARTICIPANT CHECK IN

Participant check in will be staggered according to each start wave - please arrive 45 minutes prior to your start time.

How to Check In: We do not need any paperwork. Please check in as follows:

INDIVIDUALS - By Surname
TEAMS - By TEAM CAPTAIN Surname - All of your team member bibs will be given to ONE PERSON (preferably team captain) on the day

PLEASE DO NOT BRING

  • Children in slings or strollers - exposure to the elements for babes in arms or toddlers in strollers is a high risk at this event. Get your kids to cheer you over the finish line instead.

KEY POINTS TO NOTE

  • Participants must follow all instructions provided by event organiser and staff.
  • Participant must follow all directional signage and remain on the designated Walk route.
  • Any participant who wishes to pull out part way along the course must notify event staff or phone the Safety Coordinator (phone number on your Walk bib). 
  • Participants will be required to reach Lennox Head no later than 2pm. Walkers reaching this point after 2pm will be required to finish at this checkpoint.
